Favorite Food

"Favorite Food" is a lesson designed to teach simple charting skills to nonreaders. The lesson uses a chart created with pictures of commonly enjoyed food and a bar chart that is completed by students voting on their favorite foods. Results are charted and then comparisons can be discussed. The lesson also involves learning sight words for the foods on which they are voting and an opportunity for extension in discussing favorite recipes.

Computer Literacy

  Introduction to Computer Literacy in the ESL Lab

This lesson is designed to introduce basic computer literacy information to Adult ESL Lab students.  Students will learn computer terminology and practice using tutorials.  This lesson will incorporate listening, reading, speaking and grammar skills.  This lesson will guide students through several CASAS competencies.

These activities include a high level of hands on, active involvement, manipulation of materials, and discussion, which help to cement learning and make language arts skills more concrete for the learner. Additionally, students who have writing disabilities are better able to learn because they are manipulating words and phrases rather than writing with pen/pencil and paper.

This web site takes users through the actual steps of writing a short essay.   Users develop an idea and write their own short essay, consisting of an introduction, a two-to-three paragraph body and a conclusion.  Program prompts guide users step by step through pre-writing, writing, organizing, editing, rewriting and publishing.

Business Letter Punch
This web site takes users through the actual steps of writing a business letter. Users go through the process of constructing a letter they would write in a business environment.  Steps to a finished letter include pre-writing, writing, organizing, editing, rewriting and publishing.  Completed business letters can be transferred to a word processing program, HTML editor or e-mail application.

Merit Quiz Center

The quizzes on this web site are designed to improve reading comprehension, build vocabulary and sharpen grammar skills.  The grammar, vocabulary, and writing quizzes give the user a quick assessment of eight basic skill questions.  The ESL reading quizzes have six questions.  The other reading quizzes have three texts with six questions per text.  They give the user an assessment of three basic reading skills.
