Favorite Food
Submitted by Kim Hinton, Caldwell Community College and
Technical Institute
"Favorite
Food" is a lesson designed to teach simple charting
skills to nonreaders. The lesson uses a chart created with
pictures of commonly enjoyed food and a bar chart that is
completed by students voting on their favorite foods.
Results are charted and then comparisons can be discussed.
The lesson also involves learning sight words for the foods
on which they are voting and an opportunity for extension in
discussing favorite recipes.

Focus on Basics
Focus on Basics is the quarterly publication of the National
Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy. It
presents best practices, current research on adult learning
and literacy, and how research is used by adult basic
education teachers, counselors, program administrators, and
policy makers. Focus on Basics is dedicated to connecting
research with practice, to connecting teachers with research
and researchers with the reality of the classroom, and by
doing so, making adult basic education research more
relevant to the field.
